LASIK and Diabetes
Posted by administration on May 17, 2016
Are you a diabetic and interested in LASIK? While diabetes isn’t necessarily going to prevent you from having a LASIK procedure, it does raise concerns.
According to the FDA, diabetes may be a contraindication to LASIK for several reasons. These reasons include:
- Delayed or poor healing caused by diabetes.
- Risk of post-operative or operative complications like retinal blood vessel issues.
- A weakened immune system caused by diabetes
- Unstable vision caused by diabetes, when LASIK requires stable prescription for a certain period of time.
Diabetics seeking LASIK surgery must have their blood sugar levels under control for an extended period of time. They must not be encountering any complications from the disease. Anyone with diabetes who is considering LASIK needs to be aware of the risks, which your surgeon will explain to you.
If you are a diabetic and want to consider LASIK, please contact Great Plains Eye Specialists in Rapid City. We can schedule a consultation and answer your questions.
